Tarwewijk

We are part of this city, and this city is part of us.

What makes a city like Rotterdam so special is its people, its neighbourhoods, its sense of connection, and its hands-on, can-do mentality. We are proud to contribute in a tangible way to the Tarwewijk, where we are based.

De Draaivoggl

In the year that Van Uden celebrated its 175th anniversary, the idea was born to give the city of Rotterdam a special gift: a six-metre-high owl, designed by Joep van Lieshout of art studio Brutus. In October 2025, the Owl — in true Rotterdam style — was transported over the water to its permanent location. A Rotterdam resident came up with the name ‘Draaivoggl’. It can now be admired at its home: De Balkon at the Maashaven.

Just like an owl in nature, the sculpture can rotate 360 degrees. It symbolises wisdom: looking back with pride on a rich past, looking ahead to the future, and always remaining aware of what is happening close by. The artwork aims to remind residents and visitors of the power of connection and caring for one another — values that make the Tarwewijk such a distinctive neighbourhood.

With this gift, Van Uden wishes above all to say: “Thank you, Rotterdam” — to the city that has given the company so much.

The Day of the Owl – a festival by and for the community

The unveiling of the Owl by Alderman Said Kasmi also marks the beginning of something new: from this year onwards, Rotterdam will celebrate the Day of the Owl annually. The festival is organised by Productiehuis Flow, a creative collective originating from the Tarwewijk itself. This makes it a truly community-led event. Through music, art, and connection, the festival brings residents together and celebrates the strength and unique character of the neighbourhood.

Youth community space opens in Tarwewijk

A wonderful article about the opening of the new youth community space in the Tarwewijk was published in the Havenloods. The creation of this meeting place marks the fulfilment of a long-standing ambition within the neighbourhood.

The space offers young people a safe and welcoming environment to meet, develop their talents, and discover new opportunities. A place where connection comes first and where there is room for personal growth, guidance, and support.

What makes this initiative truly special is that it has been shaped by the neighbourhood itself. Residents, social organisations, local entrepreneurs, and other committed partners have worked together to create a place that responds to the needs of young people in the Tarwewijk. It is this shared sense of ownership and involvement that gives the initiative its lasting value.

We are proud to contribute to the development of the Tarwewijk and would like to thank everyone who helped make this special place possible.

Together, we are building a neighbourhood where connection, development, and opportunity can flourish.
