How it began
From ambition to growth
In 1864, twelve-year-old Johan van ’t Hoff joined the company, taking the helm just eleven years later. Around 1900, the business expanded into the Port of Rotterdam, shifting its focus from chartering and brokerage of Rhine vessels to seagoing ships — a development that ultimately led to the establishment of our own shipping company. Generation after generation, we continue to look ahead, because entrepreneurship means anticipating the future.
From shipping to smart investments
Our journey began in 1904, alongside inland shipping, with our first seagoing vessel, the Veerhaven. In the years that followed, we expanded with liner services to North and South America, and the Havenlijn became a well-established name. As the shipping industry evolved, we embraced new directions: container and Ro-Ro transport, logistics hubs, distribution centres, and terminals.
Over time, we have evolved into a diversified investment company, active across sectors including logistics, trade, manufacturing, and real estate. We invest in a broad range of businesses, always with a focus on long-term relationships and sustainable growth
Our focus remains firmly on the future. From timber production across three continents to intelligent supply chains in food, beverages, and cleaning, we combine experience, vision, and entrepreneurship to seize opportunities and strengthen businesses.
